November 2008
Since the resignation of Shirley & Eddy Johnson and their return to the UK for personal reasons our various projects have been revisited. In the News is below and you can select to watch a short video that goes with each project.
Please Note Videos vary from 2Mb to about 5Mb max. Depending on your broadband these can take up to a minute before starting but they are all worth any wait you may experience.
Kirepwe Island
The islands water reservoir needs a few minor adjustments to enable the continued water supply to be available. The charity will support these works.
The community now requires more classrooms as the small children are all growing up and need to move on in school, plus the school at Dabasco on the mainland can't cope with the number of children who want to go to school so they travel to the island daily, they now have nearly 100 pupils. They desperately need 3 additional classrooms, the charity will try to raise funds for this project. We will also look at the problems at Dabasco school to see if we can assist with the overcrowding problem.
Mida Village
This visit exposed the need to make regular visits to our projects, they have had a serious water problem for the last 12 months, we have now resolved but this but this caused the failure of all the crops and meant they eventually had to resort to feeding the children with there most valuable asset – the goats. The charity is now purchasing more goats and seed and most importantly maize to provide there most stable food. We will keep in close touch with them during the coming months.
Dongokundu
This has been one of the longest projects that the charity has supported, they appear at present to have enough classrooms but now require sewing machines to teach the young female pupils to sew and make them self sufficient when they leave school and to provide school uniforms- a very worthwhile project. We have a qualified seamstress who has offered to spend a week at the school to train the children.
This report has been split into two parts as there is just so much going on...
Kanani Primary School
We have finished our work at this school having completed the new classrooms to their requirements
Martha
Martha is now self sufficient and adopted by a lovely family but the charity will continue to support her for the foreseeable future with personal items and small contributions to her well being.
The Community Shamba (Farm)
This project is going from strength to strength and has just won a prize for the best kept farm in the whole area, a considerable achievement. We now have 5 families each farming ¼ acre each growing crops to feed themselves. We provide the basic tools & seeds for each new family that joins the scheme. The well produced slightly salted water so the charity eventually had to provide a permanent water supply, the cost of the water is shared by everybody. Our aim is to have around 16 plus families growing there own crops.
